Product Description
The Rupert Neve Designs Portico II Master Buss Processor is a two-channel analog compressor, limiter, and stereo imaging processor that brings iconic Rupert Neve sound and incredible versatility to your mix bus or mastering chain. Based around high-voltage, discrete, Class A signal paths from the 5088 console, it features two flexible compressor sections, a single-knob limiter, Silk transformer saturation, and unique stereo field controls, all with mastering-grade detented pots for easy recall. Learn more about the Portico II Master Buss Processor and see why professional mixing and mastering engineers reach for the MBP to add glue, weight, and dimension to program material in any genre.
FLEXIBLE COMPRESSION
The MBP's two compressor sections give you ratio, threshold, attack, release, blend, gain, and side chain filtering for dual mono or stereo sources. Compressor threshold is variable from -30 dBu to +20 dBu and ratio runs from 1.1:1 to 40:1, so the same compressor covers gentle bus glue and heavy pumping effects. The FF/FB switch moves each compressor between feed forward detection for a transparent modern response and feed back operation for a smoother, vintage-style response. Attack time is variable from 20 ms to 80 ms and release from 100 ms to 3.0 seconds, while Peak mode drops detection well below 1 ms to tame fast transients. The Blend control mixes compressed and dry signals in parallel, so you can dial in the perfect balance for any source.
SILK CONTROLS
The Silk saturation circuit adjusts the harmonic content of the output stage by changing how the output transformer behaves. One illuminated switch cycles between Silk Red, Silk Blue, and Off while the Texture knob sets how much saturation you add. Silk Red lifts harmonics generated by the high frequencies and high mids of the source, adding sheen to vocals, snare, strings, and acoustic instruments, while the Blue Silk setting thickens drums, bass guitars, heavy electric guitars, and synthesizers. Leave Silk disengaged for a clean, wide-open sound, or choose your flavor and crank the Texture for instant vintage-style color.
TRANSPARENT, MUSICAL LIMITING
Featuring Adaptive Release Technology, the MBP's limiter blends several release time constants, allowing it to react quickly to fast transients such as the "snap" of a snare or slowly on sustained sources such as vocals and bass guitar. Limiter attack is 0.03 ms, quick enough to catch the first half of a 20 kHz waveform, so brickwall limiting stays clean while signals below the threshold pass untouched. Because the limiter shares the discrete Class A gain module and VCA with the compressor, this transparent limiter adds no extra stages to your path. Set the Limit control for your preferred ceiling, then raise Gain to push the stereo mix to the loudness you need. It's that simple.
IMMERSIVE STEREO FIELD EDITOR
The unique SFE circuit separates program material into mid and side components and gives you Width and Depth controls to fine-tune the spread and dimension of your mix, as well as individual filters for more control. The Width control sets the level of side information: rotate toward MAX to open up ambience and accentuate stereo reverbs, or toward MIN to contract the image and reinforce centered content. The Depth control sets the level of center information, moving lead vocals and solo instruments forward or back in the sound stage (the width control and depth control are both inactive at their 12 o'clock zero positions). Four-position bandpass filters let you widen only the top end or tighten only the low frequencies. Engaging SFE to Comp routes mid and side to the two channels of the compressor for full M-S processing in mastering applications.
ADVANCED FEATURES
The MBP compressor runs on a high-voltage 72 V topology with discrete Class A signal paths and custom input and output transformers, delivering improved headroom, dynamic range, noise, slew rate, and frequency response. Each compressor also has its own sidechain that inserts a 12 dB/octave high-pass filter to remove low-frequency information from the detector circuit and prevent unwanted "pumping." Rear-panel TRS send and return jacks let you patch an external processor into the sidechain, while a convenient Link switch sums both sidechains for stereo operation.
THE RUPERT NEVE DESIGNS LEGACY
Few names carry more weight in the studio world than Rupert Neve. Decades of console and transformer design established a sound engineers still chase today: big, open low end, silky highs, and a musical character that flatters whatever passes through it. RND carries that standard forward, building modern circuits in Texas with the same attention to transformers, discrete gain stages, and fully analog controls that made the originals last. The MBP is that philosophy applied to the master buss, putting compression, limiting, tone, and imaging in one unit that is built to sound right and to keep sounding right for decades.
