The TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik U47/U48 Stereo Set is a matched pairing of one of each of the famous TELEFUNKEN U47 and TELEFUNKEN U48 tube condenser microphones. The largest difference between the modern versions and what was available in 1958 is that the sets from 1958 were not "matched." Now they are! Each component is matched for sonic characteristics. The M7 capsules are hand selected and tested for consistent behavior in TELEFUNKEN's Connecticut laboratory, along with matched custom BV8 output transformers, VF14K tubes as well as the more mundane resistors and capacitors. Additionally, a special serial number group has been created for the modern version of the "Studio Set" making these a very rare set of birds which are not only unbelievably useful, but also rare and collectible.
The TELEFUNKEN U47 is a world-renowned tube condenser microphone used on some of the most legendary recordings of the last 75 years. This reissue stays true to the design that made the original famous, including an authentic M7 capsule, VF14K vacuum tube, and BV8 output transformer. Its warm, full sound is flattering on vocals and instruments alike, and the switchable cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns provide versatility for any situation. This studio-ready package comes with a robust power supply, elastic shock mount, locking flight case, and wooden storage box, so all you have to do is plug it in and enjoy the sound of a legendary studio mic.
TELEFUNKEN gave an already versatile microphone even more flexibility when the company launched the U48 large diaphragm tube microphone in the late 1950s, a decade after the manufacturer introduced its groundbreaking TELEFUNKEN U47. Featuring the exact same vacuum tube, output transformer and capsule as the U47, the TELEFUNKEN U48 added a third polar pattern option, “bidirectional” figure-8, that gave recording engineers even more control over room ambience and instrument bleed than the omnidirectional and cardioid pickup responses.
