The H44 has an asymmetric figure-8 polar pattern, essentially allowing it function as a vocal ribbon mic from the front and a traditional ribbon mic from the back. The back voicing has more of a classic ribbon openness that making it perfect for a large variety of sources such as overheads, guitar cabinets, strings, brass, room miking, and more. The combination of the two voicings creates a versatile package that is quick and easy to adapt to a wide variety of instruments and situations.
