In many mastering signal chain configurations, the V610 is used as the first device, as a peak limiter. The result is dramatic and measurable. With the elimination of audio program peaks, (inaudibly), signal processing devices that follow the V610 have headroom increases of 6 - 12 dB, a reduction of noise and overload distortion, and provide extended harmonic content that is lost during conventional amplifier overload.

A VERSATILE STUDIO TOOL

In the audio tracking environment, the V610 will rival and, in most cases, exceed any standalone or mixing console microphone preamplifier in terms of headroom, articulation of harmonics, and overall reduced distortion. As a vocal microphone preamplifier, excessive level changes will be easily accommodated by a compression circuit that is both fast and transparent. Guitar tracks will be both accurate and harmonic-rich. Originally introduced in 1969, the 601 set a standard that is well beyond the capabilities any other compressor limiter circuit. The V610 is an enhanced version of the C610 in that it allows for easy recall of prior settings in a high-resolution dB format. The ultra high-quality Elma switches feature mil-spec metal film resistors, and long-lasting contacts. In fact, the three space format of the V610 is due to the physical size of the switches on the control surface. In addition, the V610 employs the model 110A amplifier for makeup gain. The result is low distortion and noise, with a +24 dBu output, (irrespective of audio transient peaks).

The History Of The 601 Module and 610 Complimiter

In 1969, Spectra Sonics first utilized the 601 module in the 610 Complimiter, a piece of outboard gear that allowed users to use the compressor and limiter separately or at the same time. The house high-pass filter isn’t in line with anything, it’s usually strapped across the mono main buss, but we pulled it out and put it on a patch point.

All the way to the right, there is a control room level mute, dim talk back functionality.

You have 20 inputs into 2 busses with two sends and the additional stereo buss that you are always assigned to.
The monitor board is 16 inputs, you still have the same input attenuator but you are always on the line
input, so they live at -50, but if you needed more gain, you could flip that attenuator switch. The echo send was converted into dual concentric, the lower knob is pan and the upper is echo send. There is one echo return and one queue return, you have a level on both of those and can pan hard left, center and hard right. There are two EQs, around 10K and around 100hz inductor-based EQs, on the stereo buss and they are individually bypassable. There are also masters for left and right.

The console has half-normalled direct outs for all 20 channels, buffered and transformer isolated. The Spectra Sonics Complimiter circuit features the fastest analog peak-limiter in the world. For decades engineers have used this circuit to “invisibly” remove transient peaks from their tracks. Removing even inaudible transient peaks improves the headroom and performance of equipment downstream of the Complimiter. Now imagine applying this principal at the start of your recording chain BEFORE peaks can cause any performance issues.

The Spectra Sonics Model 611 Complimiter is a hand-built, discrete design utilizing custom transformer I/O that accepts a balanced line input, microphone input, or high-impedance ¼” input and is designed to be placed in FRONT of the mic preamp in your signal chain, thereby eliminating transient peaks as close to the source as possible. Removing peaks before the preamp allows the preamp to more accurately reproduce the source before the recording device.

Additionally, the compressor portion of the Model 611 Complimiter can be used to control the overall dynamic range – everything from evening out a bass track, to making a kick drum boom, or crushing a drum room mic. The STX series measures input signals using a VU system, which is not limited by the transient response of a signal. Drums and other percussion instruments can create transient peaks up to 24 dB above the program material average, which would easily create distortion on a traditional preamp. But the STX 100 uses two stages of independent LED overload indicators to effectively eliminate distortion from transient peaks.

CLASSIC SOUND

Bring your tracks to life with the new and improved Spectra 1964 STX 100.
